Countdown begins for SEStran Two Capitals Cycle Ride

Date : 31st May 2010

This year the SEStran Two Capitals Cycle Ride will be among the first events to take place in South East Scotland during bike week.

The ride, now in its fourth year, aims to encourage people of all ages and abilities to take up cycling for fun, exercise and as a form of transportation for shorter journeys.

Starting at Dunfermline Glen, the 21 mile route takes in the iconic Forth Road Bridge, and follows the coast along Edinburgh’s shoreline, before ending in Leith’s Victoria Park.

This year the event is being run in partnership with Kingdom FM, with Kingdom Kids and Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres, as the rides nominated charities.  All participants receive a medal, t-shirt and goody bag.

SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:

“The Two Capitals Cycle Ride is now a well-established feature of bike week in South East Scotland. By holding it at the start, we hope to encourage even more rookie cyclists to give it a try”.

“This year we are joining forces with Kingdom FM and Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres. Two of Kingdom’s star broadcasters will be with us on the ride, and they will be joined by a team from SEStran. All profits made from the event will go to the nominated charities and to promoting cycling in schools”

Kingdom FM’s Breakfast Presenter, Ian Gilmour, and Overdrive presenter, Darren Stenhouse, are already getting in training for the big day :

Ian said  :

"I can't wait to get on my Bike for Charity! The Two Capitals Bike Ride is a unique chance to cycle from Scotland's Ancient Capital to our Current Capital, and it's also a great way to keep fit and have fun at the same time, plus any chance to wear lycra for charity is too good an opportunity to miss!!"

Darren added:

I’ve been a keen cyclist for as long as I can remember. It’s a great environmentally friendly way to get around and great fun too. I’m really looking forward to taking part in the 2 Capitals event and, in particular, cycling over the Forth Road Bridge for the first time. The fact that we can raise funds for some great charities at the same time is a fantastic bonus”

Tumong Edwards, community fundraiser for Maggie’s Fife, added:

"Two Capitals is a great cycle challenge which children and adults can take part in, we are delighted to be nominated as one of their chosen charities and hope people will take part to get fit or for fun and support their local Maggie's Centre".
