SEStran Two Capitals ride starts Bike Week off with a bang

Date : 22nd June 2010

The SEStran Two Capitals cycle ride was once again a roaring success with 360 people taking part in the ride from Dunfermline to Edinburgh.

This year participants were joined by Kingdom FM’s Breakfast presenter, Ian Gilmour, and Overdrive presenter, Darren Stenhouse, who gave regular progress checks on air, while taking part in the ride.

Many participants rode on behalf of Maggies Cancer Care Centres – the events 2010 nominated charity, together with Kingdom FM kids.

SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:

“The SEStran Two Capitals Cycle Ride is now an established part of Bike Week in South East Scotland.  We have substantially increased the number of riders taking part in the event, which is now in its fourth year. We were particularly lucky to have such a gloriously sunny day for the ride”.

“We will continue to build upon this year’s success and aim to top 400 next year. I am confident that the growing interest in cycling for fun and as a form of transport for shorter journeys will make this an easily achievable target.”

Alan Prentice, of Prentice Events, who created the ride added:

“It was a fantastic day. This was the best ever, with the event breaking the 300 barrier for the first time. With riders aged 6 to 68 it was a real family day out benefiting Kingdom Kids, Maggie’s and schools".

“On the ride there were many new faces and many more taking part or the 3rd and fourth time, with all giving excellent ratings and expecting to take part again. Participants came from 36 towns all over Scotland making it into a real national event.”

Kingdom FM’s Breakfast Presenter, Ian Gilmour, and Overdrive presenter, Darren Stenhouse, were among the riders on the day. Darren said:

"Both Ian and Myself had a great time at the two capital bike ride on Sunday. Thanks to the 360 people who came along and took part to help raise money for such great causes. We were lucky the weather supported us as well on the day and look forward to next years event."

Tumong Edwards, community fundraiser for Maggie’s Fife, added:

“It's great that children and adults have taken part. Cycling is fun and a great way to keep fit”.
