Over 320 people turned out to take part in this year’s SEStran Two Capitals Cycle ride, despite fears that heavy rain might keep cyclists away.
Special care was taken to ensure the safety of participants who braved the weather to cycle the 25 mile route from Dunfermline Glen to Edinburgh’s Victoria Park.
Partnership Director Alex Macaulay said:
“It was marvellous to see so many people prepared to turn out in harsh weather in order to take part in the Two Capitals Cycle Ride. It is an all-abilities event, not targeted at hard-core cyclists; yet over 300 people took part”.
“Cycling is clearly increasing in popularity in South East Scotland and this will help cut traffic congestion, reduce the region’s carbon footprint and lead to better public health”.
“We are now looking forward to next year’s ride. With a bit of luck and some dry weather I am confident that we can set a new record for participation.”
Event Organiser Alan Prentice added:
“The SEStran two capitals ride has had another successful year. It was great to see lots of new faces young and old enjoying the family challenge. A father’s day treat for all the family. Roll on 2013!”
Tumong Edwards, Community Fundraiser for Maggie's Fife said:
"Another brilliant turn out for this local cycle. Thanks to Allan and SEStran for all their hard work putting it together and thanks to all our cyclists who took on the additional challenge with the rain, in support of Maggie's!"
Kingdom FM presenters; Darren Stenhouse, Vanessa Motion and Ali McLaren regularly put in the miles ahead of the event
OverDrive Presenter, Darren Stenhouse, said:
“The wet weather didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits on the ride and it was encouraging to see such a great spread of ages taking part”.
“The more we can encourage and educate young cyclists about the health and environmental benefits of cycling the better and the SEStran Two Capitals Ride this year also showed that they can have fun on their bikes regardless of the weather”.
