SEStran is celebrating Liftshare week (1-5 October) with an appeal for more motorists to consider car sharing as a travel option.
Over 7000 people across South East Scotland have already signed up with TripshareSestran.com to share some of their car journeys.
This year, new and existing members who register a new journey in the month of October will be entered for a free prize draw in which they can win a state of the art sat-nav system.
Car sharing offers Tripshare member’s real financial savings on fuel, parking charges and wear and tear on their cars, as well as helping to tackle congestion and reduce pollution. Typically, members can expect to save up to £1000 a year through participation in the scheme.
The service is free and confidential. Members can store their details securely, with only travel details accessible to other participants. Women can specify female-only travel companions and members can select individual preferences; such as smoking or non-smoking.
SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:
“SEStran exists to develop a sustainable transportation system for South East Scotland. Through implementation of our Regional Transport Strategy, (RTS) we aim to make public transport the mode of choice for most journeys, as well as encouraging smart choices such as car sharing and walking and cycling for shorter journeys”.
“As the region’s population grows it is vital that we reduce the number of single occupancy car journeys, if we are to avoid increasing congestion on our roads and the associated environmental consequences”.
“Car sharing is one way in which everyone can make a contribution towards protecting the environment and our quality of life. If people who routinely drive to work shared their journey just once a week it would take up to 20% of cars off the region’s roads”.
“It also makes good financial sense and reduces wear and tear on your car – and on the driver! So why not celebrate Liftshare week this year by giving car sharing a try? It’s free, it’s fun and it could save you money into the bargain”.
