SEStran’s board is to consider a report that reveals the level of usage at Alloa Station has exceeded all expectations.
A survey of patronage during the first twelve weeks shows that figure for the year may exceed 400,000 – more than double the predicted usage of 155,000.
A recent survey showed that almost half of passengers were travelling to Stirling, a third to Glasgow, while just under a quarter were going to Edinburgh and other destinations.
The survey also revealed that 70% of passengers undertook similar journeys before, of which:
30% had driven (with another 5% travelling as car passengers)
1% used a motorcycle
40% previously went by bus
24% used rail services (mainly from Stirling station)
SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:
“The incredible success of Alloa station is excellent news. It is proof-positive that when people have the option of a high-quality public transportation service, they will use it in preference to the car”.
“The figures suggest that over a 12 month period the new station will deal with up to 400,000 rail journeys. Of these 100,000 will be passengers who would otherwise have gone by car. That’s a lot of cars off the roads, and a major contribution towards reducing South East Scotland’s carbon footprint.”
“Alloa station is making a major contribution towards SEStran’s’ goal of cutting congestion on the region’s roads and encouraging people to make public transport their mode of choice”.
SEStran - South East of Scotland Transport Partnership - is one of seven new Statutory Regional Transport Partnerships (RTP) created by the Transport (Scotland) Act 2005 and is a partnership of eight local councils covering the Borders, East Lothian, West Lothian, Midlothian, Edinburgh, Fife, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire.
