SEStran report defines corridors for bus rapid transit and light rail south of the Forth

SEStran’s board is to consider a study which defines corridors for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and and Light Rapid Transit (LRT) south of the Forth Bridge. 

The study, which has been carried out to ensure that identified corridors are considered in the final designs for the new replacement Forth Bridge, highlights a range of options, taking into account practical aspects of routing.  Two optimal potential corridors have been identified :  

  • A BRT route using the A8000 corridor to the north of Kirkliston,  the M9 spur/M9 hard shoulder to Newbridge and then the A8.
 
  • An LRT route using the A8000 corridor to Kirkliston, then linking with the propsed LRT terminus at Newbridge.

 The A90 will remain the main public transport corridor to North Edinburgh. 

Councillor Russell Imrie, Chair of SEStran said: 

 “SEStran is committed to achieving a step change in transportation behaviour towards the use of public transport as the mode of choice for most journeys, and reduced reliance on cars.   It is important that BRT and LRT services are integrated with the designs for the new crossing as early as possible, so that these impotant public transport options become integral to the overall design and operation of the crossing”.
