Bustracker passenger information displays have now gone live at 13 sites in East Lothian. They join 40 displays, already installed in Midlothian as part of SEStran’s’ programme to extend Real Time Bus Information (RTPI) beyond the capital.
The displays use a satellite tracking system to provide up to the minute information on when buses are due to arrive at stops serviced by Bustracker.
SEStran aims to gradually extend RTPI across the whole of South East Scotland ad has already secured EU funding to install a system in the rest of East Lothian and the Borders. The project is currently out to tender and a further application for EU funding to cover installation throughout the rest of the SEStran region has been submitted.
SEStran Chair, Cllr Russell Imrie said:
“Real time information systems are among the most immediately and obviously useful innovations in transport information provision. By providing constant updates on arrival times for bus services, they put the travelling public back in control of their journeys.
“The passenger knows how long the wait will be, whether they have time to go and buy a newspaper, or make that telephone call; whether they are running late, or in time for appointments.
“SEStran aims to ensure that travellers throughout South East Scotland have access to the same quality of information. It is sometimes thought that sophisticated systems like RTPI are suitable only for urban areas. On the contrary, in rural areas where services are less frequent it is even more important to know exactly when a bus is going to arrive”.
Iain Coupar, Lothian Buses marketing director added:
"This extension to Bus Tracker out into East and Midlothian will be a real boon and means bus passengers get an accurate and reliable indication when to expect their bus. It's not just at the bus stop that passengers will benefit - with on-line real time tracking, passengers can check their local bus stop for the exact arrival of the next bus from the comfort of their home or office."
SEStran - South East of Scotland Transport Partnership - is one of seven new Statutory Regional Transport Partnerships (RTP) created by the Transport (Scotland) Act 2005 and is a partnership of eight local councils covering the Borders, the Lothians, Edinburgh, Fife, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire.
