SEStran and the Transport Research Institute (TRI) are the Scottish partners in an multi-national European consortium, taking forward the Euro 4.8 million European project known as "Dryport ".
The aim of the project is to to examine the critical role that dryports can play in maximising the capacity and efficiency of sea ports, while also shifting traffic off the roads and on to rail or inland waterway.
The most important aspect of Dryport will be promoting the shift of goods from road to rail and water. Dryport will be looking at the development, design and effective operation of dryports that are fully integrated with the freight handling systems of the sea port facilities they support. The project will also look at; monitoring CO2 effects and the integration of dryports into the EU’s "Motorways of the Sea" concept.
A number of reports on projects relevant, or directly linked to the dryport project are available on the SEStran website. To access a specific report please visit the relevant projects page, or click on the link below :

In September 2008 SEStran became a Scottish Partner, along with TRI, in the European funded Dryport Project, using as its basis the Regional Transport Strategy and the Regional Freight Study. Within the Dryport project, SEStran has identified key elements of the Freight Action Plan that impact on the location and operation of a Dryport.
This Rail Freight & Development Marketing Study represents the next phase in the implementation of the major elements of the Freight Action Plan, which focused on improving freight movements within the SEStran RTP area.

SEStran appointed Scott Wilson to carry out a Freight Consolidation Centre Study examining the prospective function of a Freight Consolidation Centre serving the SEStran area, and the potential for this facility to combine with the role played by the possible development of a Dryport in the region.

SEStran, Fife Council and Clackmannanshire Council appointed Scott Wilson to carry out a STAG – based study, examining freight and passenger transport connectivity issues between Clackmannanshire, Fife and Edinburgh.
The study considered a wide range of possibilities for transport enhancement, for both public transport and freight. An analysis of the key transport and travel patterns on the strategic network was undertaken.
Key issues involving both passenger and freight transport in the area were reviewed and also possible future development plans that could impact on transport were considered.
Due to the physical size of the study it has been broken into three sections which may be accessed below:
This study is one of several studies into freight transport in the SEStran area that are part of the EU Dryport project, in which SEStran is participating.
This report provides a high-level overview of sustainable urban distribution in the SEStran area , with a focus on Urban Distribution Centres (UDCs) and the use of low carbon vehicles.
