This report summarises the steps that have been taken to develop the Guidance on planning and providing sustainable transport to new developments in the SEStran area. The aim of the Guidance is to inform the Regional Transport Strategy and the Strategic Development Plan as well as local authority planners and transport planners. It sets out the key issues relating to sustainable development in this context and gives practical examples that could be transferred to the SEStran area.

The development of urban cycle networks that facilitate commuter cycling in the urbanised SEStran area is a high priority of the Regional Transport Strategy (RTS).
Safe and direct cycle routes should be parallel to the main traffic flows. This study focuses on cycle routes and facilities that are in parallel with the Regional Transport Commuter Corridors as defined in the RTS.
Within those corridors, urban areas deemed to be relevant for investigation were those with a population greater than 10,000 people.

SEStran's Sustainable Development Guidance supports a number of policies, including: climate change; transport;planning, economy and sustainable development as well as the National Strategic Objectives and Single Outcome Agreements.It aims to assist local authority planners and transport planners as well as developers to deliver strategic objectives through on the ground sustainable solutions, by offering effective advice and guidance at strategic, local and development management levels.

SEStran’s vision is that new cycling infrastructure will be given equal status with the provision of new infrastructure for other road users, particularly motor vehicles.
The improvement and maintenance of existing cycle facilities will also be afforded the same consideration as given to improving conditions for other road users.

Colin Buchanan was commissioned by SEStran to undertake a feasibility study into a potential footpath/cyclepath across the railway line to the south side of Newcraighall Rail Station.
This feasibility study has set out to examine the potential for providing a new route between Newcraighall Station and QMU by way of the existing railway bridge at the A1 to the south of the station’s platform. The study also examined the potential levels of use for such a route.

JMP was commissioned by SEStran to undertake a review of reinstating a direct pedestrian and cycle link between Cramond and the Dalmeny Estate. This report draws out the findings of that review. It outlines the objectives for the enhancement, gives the findings of a review of the feasibility of a new bridge and shows how public and stakeholder consultation informed the development of options. It then considers whether a reinstated ferry service or upgrades to existing routes could contribute to objectives.
